Stock Transfer Stamps of 1918-1940


New stock transfer US revenue stamps began appearing in 1918.  Stock transfer stamps were issued for the purpose of collecting federal taxes on sales, transfers, and certificates of stock.  

All stock transfer stamps from 1918 to 1940 are US documentary stamps that are overprinted "STOCK TRANSFER".

On this page, the illustrations for each major issue type are shown only once.  Any production varieties will be noted in the catalog detail tables following each group.



The cent-denomination documentary US revenue stamps of 1917 shown above were overprinted "STOCK TRANSFER", in sans-serif letters, between 1918 and 1928.  There is also a 1 C. denomination, which is not shown in the image above.

The dollar-denomination documentary US revenue stamps of 1917 shown above were overprinted "STOCK TRANSFER", in vertical sans-serif letters, reading upward, between 1918 and 1928.

Scarcer varieties of the 1 D., 2 D., 5 D., and 20 D. denomination stamps have the overprint reading downward.  The first 1 D. denomination stamp shown above is one of these varieties.
