The first definitive St Pierre and Miquelon stamps were issued in 1885. The earliest stamps, issued specifically for St Pierre and Miquelon, consisted of French Colonies or typeset stamps overprinted with the colony name or initials, sometimes with the addition of various re-valuations in French Centimes.
Between 1859 and 1884, French stamps and French Colonies stamps were used in St Pierre. These "forerunner" stamps were canceled with a lozenge of dots containing the letters SPM or with a St Pierre et Miquelon circular date stamp. The lozenge cancel is shown above, and the circular date cancel is shown at the top of the category page.
The eight imperforate St Pierre and Miquelon stamps shown above were issued in 1885. These stamps were produced by overprinting and re-valuing the contemporary French Colonies general issues.
There are six types of the SPM overprints described on this page, which are noted in the catalog description tables and shown in the images.
