Ornately designed Canada registration stamps were issued, beginning in 1875, to pay the additional fee on registered letter mail. These interesting stamps were printed by the British American Banknote Co. in Montreal and in Ottawa, and they are line engraved on white, wove paper.
Here's a facet of 19th Century Canadian philately that just about anyone can complete, without an excessive expenditure. If one
collects only the major Scott Catalog varieties, there are only THREE
stamps. If one collects all the Scott Catalog listed shades, there are
only EIGHT stamps. And, if one includes the two Scott Catalog listed
perforation varieties (in used condition), there would be a grand total of TEN stamps needed
to complete the collection of Canadian registration stamps.
