Portugal Stamps

Definitives of 1892-1893

The Portugal stamps of this period feature portrait definitives of King Carlos I.  These definitive types have a rather complex array of varieties.  Many different production methodologies were employed,  involving different types of papers and various perforation gauges.

Only images of the major denomination types, as listed in the Scott catalog, are shown on this page.  Each of these groups will contain catalog detail tables, separated by paper types.  The tables themselves will contain all the perforation gauge types that were produced on that particular paper.

Reprints exist of most of these Portugal stamps, so care should be taken when purchasing mint condition examples.  Collecting used condition examples is fairly safe!  Of course, for the specialist, having some reference examples of the reprints might be a good idea, as they can be used to compare with the original stamps.

The sixteen major-type definitive Portugal stamps shown above were issued between 1892 and 1893.  These definitive stamps all have the profile of King Luis I.

King Carlos I of Portugal
by: Roque Gamiero (1902)

Dom Carlos Fernando Luís Maria Victor Miguel Rafael Gabriel Gonzaga Xavier Francisco de Assis José Simão

(Lived: 1863-1908, Reigned: 1889-1908) ascended to the Portuguese throne as King Carlos I, following the unexpected death of his father in 1889.

King Carlos I was the first Portuguesse monarch to die a violet death, since King Sebastian in 1578.

During his reign, Portugal lost three of its colonies, and the government went bankrupt in 1892 and 1902.  These things were, of course, beyond the control of the king.  However, these problems led to industrial riots, as well as public criticism of the monarchy and increasing republican activism.

On February 1, 1908 the king and his family were returning to Lisbon in an open carriage.  While crossing a city square, shots were fired from a crowd by two republican activists.  The king died immediately,  Crown Prince Luis Filipe was mortally wounded and died afterwards, Prince Manuel was wounded in the arm, and the queen escaped injury.  The two assailants were killed on the spot.

Prince Manuel was immediately proclaimed king.  The young prince would also have the sad distinction of being the last king of Portugal.
