Polish Stamps

Charity Stamps of 1945-1948

Surtaxed Polish stamps, for the purpose of raising extra money for public charities, resumed after World War II.

I had to combine some of the individual stamp images into .JPG format, in order to save space.  In some instances, the stamps may not be properly scaled in size to each other.  I apologize for any such irregularities.



The four surtaxed pictorial Polish stamps shown above (Sc. #B36-B39) were issued on April 24, 1945 to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Polish Maritime League.

The designs, in ascending order by denomination, are as follows:

  • Polish Warship.
  • Sailing Ship.
  • Polish Naval Ensign and Merchant Flag.
  • Crane and Tower in Gdansk.



The surtaxed pictorial Polish stamp shown above, at the left (Sc. #B40) was issued on June 16, 1945 to publicize the Postal Workers' Convention, held in Poznan.

The design features a view of Poznan City Hall.


The surtaxed pictorial Polish stamp shown above, at the right (Sc. #B41), was issued on September 1, 1945 to commemorate the Polish Army's Last Stand at Westerplatte on September 1, 1939.

The Battle of Westerplatte was one of the first battles in Germany's invasion Poland, marking the beginning of World War II.  Though they were ultimately defeated by the Germans, the Polish forces defending Westerplatte, in Danzig (Gdansk) Harbor, held out against air and sea bombardment for seven days.  They would become the symbol of Polish resistance throughout the war.



The surtaxed pictorial Polish stamp shown above, at the left (Sc. #B42) was issued on November 18, 1945 to publicize the Trade Unions Congress, held in Warsaw.

The design features the representation of "United Industry".


The surtaxed pictorial stamp shown above, at the right (Sc. #B43) was issued on March 10, 1946 to commemorate the participation of the Jaroslaw Dabrowski Brigade in the Spanish Civil War.

The design features the representation of Polish Volunteers in Spain.



The surtaxed pictorial Polish stamp shown above, at the left (Sc. #B44) was issued on May 2, 1946 to commemorate the Silesian Uprisings of 1919-1921 and 1939-1945.


The surtaxed pictorial stamp shown above, in the middle (Sc. #B45) was issued on April 29, 1946 to memorialize the Majdanek Concentration Camp of World War II, near Lublin.

The design features a representation of "Death" Spreading Poison Gas over the Majdanek Concentration Camp.


The surtaxed pictorial stamp shown above, at the right (Sc. #B46) was issued on April 19, 1946 to commemorate the 600th Anniversary of Bydgoszcz (Bromberg).

The design features a view of Bydgoszcz (Bromberg) Canal.



The three surtaxed pictorial Polish stamps and the souvenir sheet shown above (Sc. #B49-B49B, #B49Bc) were issued on October 10, 1946 to publicize Polish Educational Work

The surtax was for the International Bureau of Education.

The designs of the three stamps are as follows:

  • School Children.
  • Courtyard of Jagiellon University in Krakow.
  • Portrait of Gregor Piramowicz (1735-1801), the founder of the Education Commission.



The three surtaxed pictorial Polish stamps shown above (Sc. #B50-B52) were issued on December 1, 1946 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Peasant Movement.

The surtax was for education and cultural improvement among the Polish peasantry.

The common design features portraits of Stanislaw Stojalowski (1845-1911), Jakob Bojko (1857-1903), Jan Stapinski (1867-1946), and Wincenty Witos (1874-1945), who were all Polish political leaders.



The overprinted, re-valued, and surtaxed Polish stamp shown above, at the left (Sc. #B54) was issued on February 21, 1947 to publicize the Ski Championship Meet at Zakopane.


The surtaxed stamp shown above, in the middle (Sc. B56) was issued on June 1, 1947 to honor the Red Cross and War Victims.

The surtax was for the Red Cross.


The surtaxed stamp shown above, at the right (Sc. #B57), was issued on December 21, 1947 to honor the work of Adam Chmielowski.

The surtax was for Winter Relief.

Adam Chmielowski (1845-1916) was a painter, and later, a Catholic priest.  He was the founder of the "Servants of the Poor" in 1888, an organization providing shelter and food for the poor, as well as nurseries and institutions for homeless children and youth.



The four surtaxed pictorial Polish stamps shown above (Sc. #B59-B62) were issued on December 16, 1948 to publicize the Campaign Against Tuberculosis .

The surtax was for anti-tuberculosis work among children.

The designs feature portraits of children.

These stamps were issued in panes containing alternating vertical rows of 10 different labels.  With each stamp having collectible left side or right side se-tenant possibilities with ten different labels, there are twenty possible combinations for each stamp.  This one set could almost become a collecting specialty in itself!

The surtaxed stamp shown above (Sc. #B47) was issued on July 21, 1946 to celebrate the Maritime Holiday of 1946.

The surtax was for the Polish Maritime League.

The design features a map of the Polish coast and the Baltic Sea.




The surtaxed stamp shown above (Sc. #B48) was issued on September 14, 1946 to honor the Polish postal employees killed in the German attack on Gdansk (Danzig) in 1939.




The surtaxed stamp shown above (Sc. #B53) was issued on February 4, 1947 to celebrate the Opening of the Polish Parliament.

The design features portraits of Poland's new leaders, Premier Edward Osubka-Morawski (1909-1997), President Boleslaw Bierut (1892-1956), and Marshal Michael Rola-Zymierski (1890-1989).




The surtaxed pictorial stamp shown above (Sc. #B55) was issued on March 1, 1947 honor Emil Zegadlowicz.

Emil Zegadłowicz (1888-1941) was a Polish author, journalist, poet, playwright and translator.




The surtaxed pictorial stamp shown above (Sc. #B58) was issued on November 1, 1948 to publicize the Reconstruction of Warsaw.

The surtax aided the post-war Reconstruction of Warsaw.

The design features Zamkowy Square and a proposed highway.
