Polish Stamps

Definitives of 1925-1934

The first first pictorial definitive Polish stamps appeared between 1925 and 1927, and later definitive postage stamps from 1928 to 1931 feature Polish statesmen and the Polish heraldic eagle.

The eleven pictorial definitive Polish stamps shown above were issued between 1925 and 1927.

The major designs, in the order that they appear in the set, are as follows:

  • Holy Gate of Wilno (also called the Gate of Dawn, in present day Vilnius, Lithuania).  The city gate was built in the 16th Century, and the religious icons within it were intended to guard the city of Vilnius from attacks and to bless travelers.
  • Poznan Town Hall.  The town hall was built during the 16th Century.
  • Zigsmund Column in Warsaw.  Erected in 1644, the column and statue commemorate King Sigismund III Vasa, who moved Poland's capitol from Krakow to Warsaw in 1596.
  • Wawel Castle in Kracow.  Constructed during the 16th Century, the castle was the residence of the Polish kings, and it remains the symbol of Polish statehood.
  • Zobieski Statue in Lwow (also Lviv or Lvov, in present day Galicia, Ukraine).  John III Sobieski (1629-1696) was the King of Poland (1674-1696).  The monument, originally erected to commemorate the king's victory over the Turks during the Siege of Vienna, was relocated to Warsaw in 1950 and again relocated to Gdansk in 1955.
