The first Lithuania stamps were produced in December 1918. The postal service of the Post-World-War I republic urgently required new definitive postage stamps, so perforated type-set stamps were quickly produced in Vilnius and Kaunas.
These first definitive stamps were printed in sheets of twenty, and they were perforated 11 1/2.
The outside borders of the sheets were not perforated, so there are
only six stamps in each of the sheets that are perforated all the way
around. These stamps are valued at double the prices of the same stamps
that have straight-edges. A sheet of the 10 S. denomination of the First Vilnius Printing is shown above.
Some of the Kaunas printings were also
produced in sheets of 160 stamps, composed of blocks of twenty of
variable denominations. Pairs or blocks of these printings exist, with
different denominations being se-tenant with each other, however they
are very scarce.
