Latvian Stamps

Issues of 1920-1921


The new Latvian stamps of 1920 to 1921 were primarily re-valued versions of previously issued commemorative stamps that were designed to fill an urgent need for higher-denomination definitive postage stamps.



The three Independence type stamps of 1919 shown above were overprinted and re-valued on September 1, 1920.

The Scott catalog attributes are as follows:

  • 10 R. on 01 R.  (1920 - Sc. #83) - Green & Red.
  • 20 R. on 01 R.  (1920 - Sc. #84) - Green & Red.
  • 30 R. on 01 R.  (1920 - Sc. #85) - Green & Red.



The two Latvian stamps of 1919 shown above were overprinted and re-valued during September 1920.

The Scott catalog attributes are as follows:

  • 02 R. on 10 R.  (1920 - Sc. #86) - Deep Blue.
  • 02 R. on 35 K.  (1920 - Sc. #87) - Brown.



The two Independence type stamps of 1919 shown above were overprinted and re-valued in 1920 and 1921.

The Scott catalog attributes are as follows:

  • 02 R. on 35 K.  (1920 - Sc. #88) - Indigo & Green.
  • 10 R. on 10 R. on 01 R.  (1921 - Sc. #94) - Green & Red.



The three Liberation of Kurzeme type stamps of 1919 to 1920 shown above were overprinted and re-valued in 1920.

The Scott catalog attributes are as follows:

  • 01 R. on 35 K.  (1920 - Sc. #91) - Black & Blue.
  • 02 R. on 10 K.  (1920 - Sc. #92) - Brown & Rose.
  • 02 R. on 25 K.  (1920 - Sc. #85) - Indigo & Green.



The five Latgale Province type stamps of 1920 shown above were overprinted and re-valued in May and June of 1920.

The Scott catalog attributes are as follows:

  • 010 R. on 50 K.  (1921 - Sc. #95) - Deep Green & Rose.
  • 020 R. on 50 K.  (1921 - Sc. #96) - Deep Green & Rose.
  • 030 R. on 50 K.  (1921 - Sc. #97) - Deep Green & Rose.
  • 050 R. on 50 K.  (1921 - Sc. #98) - Deep Green & Rose.
  • 100 R. on 50 K.  (1921 - Sc. #99) - Deep Green & Rose.


Forgeries exist of some of the higher-priced overprinted and re-valued stamps shown on this page.  It would be a good idea to only purchase certified or authenticated examples of these stamps.

Post-war inflation in the early days of the Republic of Latvia was rampant.  The inflationary period was finally halted in 1922, when the new Latvian "Lat" currency (100 Santims = 1 Lat) was launched, replacing the contemporary Latvian "Rubli" currency (100 Kapeikas = 1 Rubli).
