Faroe Islands Stamps

Issues of 1975-1978

The first "official" Faroe Islands stamps were issued at the beginning of 1975, featuring a series of pictorial definitive stamps.  In fact, all of the stamps of the Faroe Islands are pictorials.  They provide a welcome change from the rather boring portrait or emblematic definitive stamp series of some of the major postage stamp issuing countries.

One clever aspect of these new definitive stamps is that about half of them feature classical maps of the Faroe Islands and of the North Atlantic Ocean.  With the emergence of a new national postal service, it is as if the Faroese were saying "Here we are!" and "Here's how to find us!".



The fourteen pictorial definitive stamps shown above (Sc. #7-20) were issued on January 30, 1975

Their designs are as follows:

  • 005 Ø.  -  Map of the Faroe Islands c. 1673.
  • 010 Ø.  -  Map of the North Atlantic c. 1573.
  • 050 Ø.  -  Map of the Faroe Islands c. 1673.
  • 060 Ø.  -  Map of the North Atlantic c. 1573.
  • 070 Ø.  -  View of the West Coast of Sandoy Island.
  • 080 Ø.  -  Map of the North Atlantic c. 1573.
  • 090 Ø.  -  Map of the Faroe Islands c. 1673.
  • 120 Ø.  -  Map of the North Atlantic c. 1573.
  • 200 Ø.  -  View of the West Coast of Sandoy Island.
  • 250 Ø.  -  View of the Streymoy and Vagar Islands.
  • 300 Ø.  -  View of the Streymoy and Vagar Islands.
  • 350 Ø.  -  View of Vidoy and Svinoy Islands, by Eyvindur Mohr (1926-2005).
  • 450 Ø.  -  Houses in Nes, Eysturoy Island, by Ruth Smith Nielson (1913-1958).
  • 500 Ø.  -  View of Hvitanes, Streymoy Island and the distant Skalafjordur of Eysturoy Island, by Samal Joensen-Mikines (1906-1979).



The three pictorial Faroe Islands stamps shown above (Sc. #21-23) were issued on April 1, 1976 to celebrate the creation of the Faroe Islands independent postal service

The three designs are as follows:

  • 125 Ø.  -  Faroe Islands boat.
  • 160 Ø.  -  Faroe Islands flag.
  • 800 Ø.  -  Faroe Islands mailman.



The four pictorial stamps shown above (Sc. #24-27) were issued on April 28, 1977, and they feature Faroe Islands fishing vessels

The four designs are as follows:

  • 100 Ø.  -  Map of the islands and a motor fishing boat.
  • 125 Ø.  -  Map of the islands and an inland fishing cutter.
  • 160 Ø.  -  Map of the islands and a fishing trawler.
  • 600 Ø.  -  Map of the islands and a deep-sea fishing trawler.



The three pictorial stamps shown above (Sc. #28-30) were issued on September 29, 1977, and they feature Faroe Islands birds

The three designs are as follows:

  • 070 Ø.  -  Common Snipe.
  • 180 Ø.  -  Oystercatcher.
  • 250 Ø.  -  Whimbrel.



The five pictorial Faroe Islands stamps shown above (Sc. #31-35) were issued on January 26, 1978, and they feature Mykines Island

The designs are as follows:

  • 100 Ø.  -  Puffins in flight along the North Coast.
  • 130 Ø.  -  An island village.
  • 140 Ø.  -  Agricultural scene.
  • 150 Ø.  -  Aerial view of the island.
  • 180 Ø.  -  Map of the island.



The three pictorial Faroe Islands stamps shown above (Sc. #36-38) were issued on April 13, 1978, and they feature Faroe Islands sea birds

The three designs are as follows:

  • 140 Ø.  -  Gannets.
  • 180 Ø.  -  Puffins.
  • 400 Ø.  -  Guillemots.



The two pictorial Faroe Islands stamps shown above (Sc. #39-40) were issued on December 7, 1978 to celebrate the completion of the new library building

The designs are as follows:

  • 140 Ø.  -  Old library building.
  • 180 Ø.  -  New library building.
