The first "official" Faroe Islands stamps were issued at the beginning of 1975, featuring a series of pictorial definitive stamps. In fact, all of the stamps of the Faroe Islands are pictorials. They provide a welcome change from the rather boring portrait or emblematic definitive stamp series of some of the major postage stamp issuing countries.
One clever aspect of these new definitive stamps is that about half of them feature classical maps of the Faroe Islands and of the North Atlantic Ocean. With the emergence of a new national postal service, it is as if the Faroese were saying "Here we are!" and "Here's how to find us!".
