Andorra Stamps

Issues of 1944-1951

A new series of definitive French Andorra stamps were introduced, beginning in 1944 and continuing through 1951.  Small-format definitive stamps were used for the lower denominations (Centime denominations) and large-format pictorial stamps were used for the higher denominations (Franc denominations).

The first French Andorra airmail stamp, issued in 1950, is also included at the bottom of this page.



The seven lower-denomination definitive French Andorra stamps shown above were issued in 1944.  They are engraved and perforated 14 x 13.

The common design of these stamps features a shield, with the Coat of Arms of Andorra.

The Scott catalog attributes are as follows.

  • 10 C.  (1944 - Sc. #78) - Violet.
  • 30 C.  (1944 - Sc. #79) - Deep Magenta.
  • 40 C.  (1944 - Sc. #80) - Dull Blue.
  • 50 C.  (1944 - Sc. #81) - Orange Red.
  • 60 C.  (1944 - Sc. #82) - Black.
  • 70 C.  (1944 - Sc. #83) - Bright Red Violet.
  • 80 C.  (1944 - Sc. #84) - Blue Green.



The twenty higher-denomination definitive French Andorra stamps shown above were issued between 1944 and 1947.  They are engraved and perforated 13.

The four common designs, in the order that they appear in the images above, are as follows.

  • Sant Joan de Caselles - The 11th Century church located in Canillo, Andorra.
  • La Maison des Vallees - A 16th Century house in Andorra la Vella, the Capitol City of Andorra.  It is the headquarters of the General Council (Parliament) of Andorra.
  • Andorra la Vella - View of the Capitol.
  • A Provost - Provost is defined as a senior administrative officer.

The nine pictorial definitive French Andorra stamp types of 1944-1947 shown above were issued during 1948 and 1949.  These new pictorial stamps feature changes to existing denominations, as well as the introduction of new denominations.

  • 06.00 F.  (1948 - Sc. #106) - Violet Brown.
  • 08.00 F.  (1948 - Sc. #107) - Indigo.

  • 12.00 F.  (1949 - Sc. #109) - Blue Green.

The 100 F. denomination pictorial French Andorra airmail stamp shown above was issued on February 20, 1950.  The stamp is engraved and perforated 13.

The design features two Chamois on a ledge, with the Pyrenees Mountains in the background.  A Chamois is an agile, goat-antelope, native to the mountains of Europe.

The catalog attributes are as follows.

  • 100 F.  (1950 - Sc. #C1) - Indigo.
