First French Postage Stamp of Andorra
with a Doubled Overprint (Sc. #1a)


The first French Andorra stamps were created in 1931 by overprinting the contemporary definitive postage stamps of the Republic of France.  They were soon followed by pictorial definitive French stamps for Andorra, beginning in 1932.



The twenty-two major type definitive French postage stamps shown above were overprinted for use as Andorra stamps on June 16, 1931.  They are all typographed on unwatermarked paper, and they are perforated 14 x 13 1/2.

The fifty-seven pictorial French Andorra stamps shown above were issued between 1932 and 1943.  They are all engraved on unwatermarked paper, and they are perforated 13.

These Andorra stamps are all inscribed "Vallees d'Andorre", the original name given to the region that became the Principality of Andorra.

The designs of these pictorial Andorra stamps, in the order of their appearance above, are as follows.

  • Our Lady of Meritxell Chapel - The 12th Century chapel houses the Our Lady of Meritxell statue.  The statue is said to depict a 12th Century apparition of the Virgin Mary.  Our Lady of Meritxell is the patron saint of Andorra, and her feast day, September 8, is a national holiday.
  • Pont de la Margineda - The arched Romanesque bridge, located in the parish of Andorra la Vella, near La Margineda, Andorra.
  • Church of Sant Miquel d'Engolasters - The 11th Century church, located in Engolasters, Andorra.
  • Gorge of Sant Julia - A canyon near Sant Julia de Loria, Andorra.
  • Andorra la Vella - A view of Andorra la Vella (Old Andorra), the Capitol City of Andorra since 1278.

The fourteen lower-denomination definitive Andorra stamps shown above were issued between 1936 and 1942.  They are engraved and perforated 14 x 13.

The common design features the Andorra Coat of Arms.

The 1/2 C. newspaper rate Andorra stamp of 1931 also exists with a doubled overprint.  An example is shown above (Sc. #P1a).



The 50 C. pictorial definitive Andorra stamp shown above (Sc. #64) was revalued for use as a 20 C. definitive postage stamp on September 18, 1935.

This stamp exists with an inverted surcharge, but it is very rare.
